How is cholesterol made by the body?
Scientists estimate that 80% of the body's cholesterol is made in the liver and the remaining 20% is supplied to the body through a person's diet. To a certain natural balance point, cholesterol is essential for healthy hormone production and cell membrane structure. This natural balance point is determined by a biochemical relationship between the liver and an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. The liver creates cholesterol until the HMG-CoA reductase senses the body has enough and thereby, inhibits the production of cholesterol in the liver. For some, this internal regulatory system breaks down, producing an excess amount of cholesterol. For others, bad cholesterol intake via fatty foods can slow down this natural, biofeedback system. Both result in unwanted, elevated cholesterol levels in the blood.
What cholesterol levels are desirable?
In the US, total cholesterol is a measure, in milligrams, of the total amount of cholesterol present per deciliter of blood. For heart-health assessment purposes, total cholesterol levels are defined as:
- Desirable: 200mg/dL
- Borderline-High: 200-239 mg/dL
- High: 240 mg/dL
For every 2 percentage points above 200, your risk for cardiovascular disease increases by 1 percent. So a measurement of 250 points means your risk is 25% higher than average. According to the Center for Disease Control, at least HALF of American adults (99.8 million people) have cholesterol levels above the desired, normal 200 mg/dL level. People in the borderline-high range (estimated 60 million) may have no symptoms at all, yet they may harbor a silent time-bomb waiting to explode into serious heart issues. The most important way to know your status is to get your cholesterol checked regularly.
